It is believed that by observing this fast, a person can attain 'Moksha' and can enter Vaikunth directly after death.

Story of Prabodhni Ekadashi

A legend associated with Prabodhani Ekadashi is very popular. In ancient times, there was a king named Suryavanshi Mandhata. He was truthful, great, majestic and full of qualities like Chakravati. He used to take care of his subjects like a son. There was never a famine in his kingdom.

Once upon a time there was a famine in the king's kingdom and people were very upset due to lack of food grains. Yagyas in the state have stopped. One day I went to the Praja Raja and started praying, O Rajan, rain is the main reason for happiness of the whole world. Due to the lack of this rain, there is a famine in the state and due to the famine, people are dying due to lack of food grains.

Seeing this, the king prayed to God, God, tell me some way to end this famine. After praying this, the Mandhata took the main people along and walked towards the forest, while wandering, he reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, son of Brahma. At that place the king descended from the chariot and went to the ashram. There, the sage was just retired from the daily activities, when the king bowed before him, and the sage blessed him too, then said to the king sage, O Maharishi, my kingdom has not been raining for three years, all four. And there is a famine, and the people are suffering very sadly. People suffer only due to the influence of the sins of the king. It is written in such scriptures, while I follow all the rules of religion.

On this, the sage said, 'O Rajan, if you want to get rid of it, then observe the Ekadashi named Padma of Shukla Paksha of Ashada month. Due to the effect of a fast, there will be rain in your state, and the people will get happiness again.

According to the sage's statement, the king returned to his city and fasted on Ekadashi. Due to the effect of this fast, there was rain in the state and humans got happiness. Lord Shri Vishnu is pleased by observing the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi and people desiring salvation must do this Ekadashi fast.
