Anant Chaturdashi~

This fasting religious ritual is performed on the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. The principal deities of this observance are Lord Ananta, Lord Vishnu, while the subordinate deities are Shesha and Yamuna. This implicit religious observance is mainly done to regain lost grandeur. It is generally of fourteen years duration. This fasting religious ritual is started when recommended by a person or if the thread of the Anant tree is easily purchased. It is then carried forward into that family. On the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) Purnima (full moon) day, it proves to be particularly beneficial.

Anant Chaturdashi is also the last day of Hindu Ganeshotsav. It usually occurs after the tenth or eleventh day of Ganesh Chaturthi, and all Ganesh idols brought to homes and communities are immersed in the sea or nearby lakes or rivers. On this day, people travel to the coast with big idols, without distinction of big and small, dancing and singing. Lord Ganesha is sent off, so that he will be welcomed again next year with the same enthusiasm.

Additionally, in Bihar and parts of eastern UP, Anant Chaturdashi is associated with the Kshirsagar (ocean of milk) and the infinite form of Lord Vishnu. Fourteen tilak (small vertical strips) of vermilion are made on a wooden plank. Fourteen puris (fried wheat bread) and fourteen pua (deep fried sweet wheat bread) are placed on vermilion strips. Panchamrit (made of milk, curd, jaggery, honey and ghee) symbolizing Kshirsagar (ocean of milk) is placed on a wooden plank. Fourteen knot thread, the symbol of Lord Ananta is wrapped on a cucumber and rolled five times. In this "ocean of milk". Finally this infinite thread is tied by men on the right hand above the elbow. The women tie it on their left arm. This infinite formula is removed after fourteen days.

Story behind the festival

There was a Brahmin named Sumant. He had a daughter named Sushila from his wife Diksha. After Diksha's death, Sumant marries Karkesh, who is very upset with Sushila. Sushila got married to Kaundinya and the two decided to leave the house to avoid the stepmother's persecution. On the way they stopped near a river. Kaundinya went to bathe and Sushila joined the group of women who were worshiping. He told Sushila that he was worshiping "Anant". "What kind of worship is this?" Susheela asked. "Fast of infinity"

He told her that it was a vow to Anant. Then they explained to him the importance of that fast. Some fried "gharga" (made of flour) and "anarsay" (special food) are prepared. Half of them have to be given to Brahmins. A hooded snake (cobra) made of "Darbha" (sacred grass) is placed in a bamboo basket. Then the snake ("sheesh") is worshiped with fragrant flowers, oil lamps and incense sticks. The snake is offered food and a silk wire is placed in front of the god, and tied to the wrist. This wire is called "Ananta", has 14 knots, and is colored with "Kunkum". Women tie "Anant" on their left hand and men on their right. The purpose of this fast is to attain divinity and wealth, and is kept for 14 years.

After hearing this explanation, Sushila decided to take an infinite vow. From that day onwards she and her husband Kaundinya began to prosper and became very rich.

One day Kaundinya saw the string of infinity on Susheela's left hand. When he heard the story of Anant Vrat, he was angered and said that he did not become rich due to the power of Anant, but earned from his efforts due to his knowledge. With a sharp argument, Kaundinya took the infinite wire from Susheela's hand and threw it into the fire.

After this, many kinds of disasters came in his life and finally he came in extreme poverty. Kaundinya understood that this was a punishment for insulting the "infinite", and he decided that he would perform rigorous penance until God himself appeared to him.

Kaundinya went into the forest in search of Anant. There he saw a tree full of mangoes, but no one was eating mangoes. The entire tree was attacked by insects. He asks the tree if he has seen Anant, but he gets a negative answer. Then Kaundinya saw a cow with his calf, then an ox stood in the meadow without eating grass. Then he saw that the two big lakes are connected to each other with their water mixture. Next he saw a donkey and an elephant. Everyone was asked by Kaundinya about Anant, but no one had heard this name. He then became desperate and prepared a rope to hang himself.

Then suddenly an old venerable Brahmin came in front of them. He removed the rope from Kaundinya's throat and took him to a cave. At first it was very dark. But then a bright light appeared and they reached a big palace. A large gathering of men and women was assembled. The old Brahmin rose directly to the throne.

Then Kaundinya could no longer see Brahmin, but only Vishnu. Kaundinya felt that Vishnu himself came to save him, and that Vishnu was infinite. He confesses his sin of failing to recognize the eternal in Sushila's hand wrist. Anant promises Kaundinya that if he vows for 14 years, he will be free from all his sins, and will receive wealth, children and happiness. Anant then reveals the meaning of everything he had seen to Kaundinya during the search. Anant explained that the mango tree was a Brahmin, who had gained a lot of knowledge in a previous life, but had not communicated it to anyone.

The cow was Prithvi, who initially ate all the seeds of the plants. The bull was the only religion. Now he was standing on a field of green grass. The two lakes were two sisters who loved each other very much, but all their begging was spent on each other. The donkey was cruel and angry. Finally the pride of elephant Kaundinya.
