Karthigai Deepam or Karthikai Vilasakidu is a Tamil and Telugu Hindu, Light festival. It is perhaps the most celebrated festival by South Indian people. The festival is mostly celebrated in Hindu homes and every temple, and according to the Tamil calendar falls in the period from Karthikai (mid-November to December). Kartigai Deepam occurs on the day when the moon constellation Purnami and Kartigai appear together. This constellation appears as a group of six stars in the sky in the shape of a pendant from the ear.

Story Behind Karthigai Deepam

According to mythological beliefs, once Lord Brahma and Vishnu were discussing who is the supreme among them. To teach them and confirm their supremacy above all, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite fire and asked them both to find the top and bottom ends of the fire. Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards, while Vishnu as a Varaha progressed under the fire. However, both failed in their efforts and considered Lord Shiva's power above all. It is believed that later Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a huge fire hill called Arunachal. To commemorate this legend, holy fire is lit in a huge lamp every year on the occasion of Kartigai Deepam.

According to another story, on Karthigai Deepam, Lord Muruga who was born as six flames from the third eye of Lord Shiva and was raised as six beautiful babies by Karthigai Pengal (six young women), who was the goddess Parvati had united with a single boy.

Deepam is also a symbol of the victory of good over evil on both the spiritual and physical fronts and celebrates the victory of Goddess Parvati over the demon Mahishasura as a festival by lighting a lamp.

Ritual During Karthigai Deepam

On this day houses are cleaned and washed. A floral motif called 'Kolam' is made with a mixture of rice flour in front of the house to worship the Gods and Goddesses.

The lamp named 'Agal' is then placed in front of the god and used as a decoration in Kolam.

The fast is kept till the time of sunset and after opening the fast special dishes are made for eating.

The entire house is illuminated with the lights of Diya's. Various artefacts of the lamp are used as a symbolic form of mythology - Lakshmi Vilaku as a woman with folded hands, Kuthu Vilaku with five petal flowers and Gajalakshmi Vilaku - elephant shaped lamp.

This festival also makes the bonding of sister-brother again prominent as the sisters pray and fast for the long life of their brothers and their success.

In Andhra Pradesh, on the occasion of Poornima or Kartik Panchami, a huge lamp is lit with 365 vixas to remove any evil and follow the sacred text of Kartikeya Puranam to bring auspiciousness and good luck to you. is.

The festival is celebrated with great pomp in the Shiva temples in the Thiruvarna Malai hills of Tamil Nadu. In Karthikai Deepam, a huge fire is on top of a hill that is visible from many kilometers around it.
