Story of Mahesh Navami

There is a mythological folklore associated with Mahesh Navami, according to which a king named Khandsen ruled in ancient times. He used to take great interest in the work of praja seva and dharma-karma, but he was often very unhappy because of his absence. With the wish of the son, the king performed a Kamshakti Yajna and the sages blessed the king to be a brave and courageous son and told him to stop going north for twenty years. By the grace of God, the king received a son, named Sujan Kanwar. He was brave, brilliant and skilled in weapons. Amidst all this, one day the prince went into the forest to hunt and suddenly started going north. They did not stop even after the allies stopped. Near the Surya Kund in the north direction some sages were performing the sacrificial fire. The prince thought that he was not allowed to keep the north direction only in the dark and in anger he disturbed the yagna. The angry sages cursed him in anger, and he turned into a stone idol. On receiving this news, King Shok died and his queens were widowed. Subsequently, Rajkumar Sujan's wife Chandravati went to the sages along with the wives of the allies and started apologizing. On this the sages asked them to worship Lord Bhole Nath and Mother Parvati. After this, everyone sincerely worshiped Lord Mahesh and Maa Parvati and by their grace the prince and his associates got a new lease of life. On the statement of Lord Shankar, the ancestors of this society renounced Kshatriya karma and adopted the Vaishya religion.

The freed hunters and their families gave up hunting and concentrated on business and they named their community Maheshwari community after Lord Mahesh to show their love and devotion to Shiva. In this way Lord Shiva was the savior of the ancestors of the community.
