Mokshda Ekadashi~

Mokshda Ekadashi is celebrated as Geeta Jayanti on the Ekadashi date (11th day) of Shukla Paksha during the lunar month of 'Margashira'. According to the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls between the months of November to December. As the name implies, the observer of the Mokshda Ekadashi fast will receive liberation or moksha from the cycle of birth and death and have darshan of 'Vaikuntha', the holy abode of Lord Vishnu. This Ekadashi is celebrated with devotion and fervor throughout the country. Mokshda Ekadashi is also called the form of ‘silent Ekadashi’ and on this day devotees observe ‘silence’ (no matter) throughout the day. This Ekadashi is known as Baikuntha Ekadashi in the South Indian state of Orissa and its adjoining areas. Mokshda Ekadashi is very remarkable because it can also forgive all the evil deeds and sins committed during the lifetime.

Mokshda Ekadashi Mythology

Once upon a time, a king named Vaikhanas lived in Gokul Nagar. He was a king of very religious nature. Time was also spent with happiness. There was no crisis of any kind in the state. One day it happened that King Vaikhanas was resting in his bedroom. Then he has a strange dream in which he sees that his father (who had died) is being tortured a lot in hell. Seeing his father in these sufferings, the king was distraught and woke up. The king kept thinking about his dream all night but could not understand anything, then he called the Brahmins as soon as morning. When the Brahmin arrived, the king told him about his dream. The king's dream made the Brahmins realize that his father was suffering from death, but he expressed an inability to suggest any way to be free from them. He suggested King Vaishnaka. He said that your doubts can be resolved by a monk named Samadhavat. He is a well-known monk. So you go to them as soon as possible and find a solution. Now King Vaishnak did the same and reached the ashram of the mountain monk with his doubts. When the sage heard the king's dream, he too was once afraid of evil. Then he saw the king's father with his yogic vision. They were literally suffering in hell. He also understood the reason for this. Then he told the king that, O Rajan, your father is facing the punishment of sins of his previous birth. He did not respect the other woman under the control of the stepmother, he refused the donation. Then the king asked him, how can my father get rid of it? Then the mountain sage told him that if you fast for Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi according to the law, Rajan can attain salvation and donate his virtue to his father. The king did the same. Following the fast of Margashirsha Ekadashi and donated it to his father. As a result, the king saw directly that his father was going to Baikuntha. He said, O son, I will enjoy salvation for some time and get salvation. All this was made possible by your fast, you have completed the religion of being a son in the true sense by saving me from the life of hell. Good welfare, son You have fulfilled the religion of being a son in the true sense by saving me from this hellish life. Good welfare, son

The fasting of Ekadashi by the king caused his father's sins to decay and he attained salvation, which is why this Ekadashi is called Mokshda Ekadashi. Since Lord Krishna also preached the Gita on this day, this Ekadashi becomes even more prominent.

Ritual and Ceremony:

Devotees wake up early in the morning on Mokshda Ekadashi and bathe. Fasting is another important ritual. In Mokshda Ekadashi fast, one has to spend a whole day without eating and drinking. A fast is kept from the day of Ekadashi till the morning of Dwadashi. Partial fasting is additional permitted by expanding milk, dairy products, vegetarian food products. Rice, cereals, heartbeats, onions, and garlic are not used. Devotees seek their favors from Lord Vishnu. The sacred Bhagavad Gita is likewise venerated, and the messages are associated with ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’ and ‘Mukundashtakam’. Devotees visit the temple of Lord Vishnu to give petitions.
