Introduction
The full moon day in the month of Ashadh (July) of the Hindu calendar is celebrated as Guru Purnima by all Hindus all over. This day is celebrated as a mark of respect to the “Guru” i.e. a teacher or a preacher.
This day is celebrated in the sacred memory of the great sage Vyasa, the ancient saint who compiled the four Vedas, wrote 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata.
The day, also known as “Vyasa Purnima” is observed by devotees who offer pujas (worship) to their beloved Gurus. Sage Vyasa is known to be the Adi (original) Guru of the Hindu religion. The auspicious day of Vyaasa Purnima has a great significance as everybody knows that the role of a Guru in real life is very much important.
Celebration
Hindus show much respect to their gurus. Gurus are often regarded as God. The Shvetashvatara Upanishad (6/23) tells :
“Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau
Tasyaite kathitaa hi arthaaha prakashante mahatmanaha”
This means, Guru to be worshipped in the same manner as the deity - God, to attain all there is to attain on the path of God-realization. When this Self is within you where is the need to search for someone to teach you!
On this day several programs and cultural performances are organized by spiritual organizations. Divine discourse and bhajan samarohas are also organized to make the day more special.
In India, Guru Purnima is celebrated at various ashrams. The day is celebrated on a grand scale by devotees at various parts of the country mostly at the places of spiritual importance. Guru Purnima is also celebrated few places outside India.
This is a day to pay thanks for spiritual seekers who remain extremely open to their gurus to receive divine power, and for this reason holy people choose this day to shower everyone with their most auspicious divine blessings.
Significance
The day of Guru Purnima has great significance for spiritual sadhaks and farmers. All spiritual aspirants and devotees worship Vyasa in honor of his divine personage and all disciples perform 'puja' of their respective spiritual preceptor or 'Gurudevas'. They offer flowers and sweets to their spiritual gurus. It is also good time to begin spiritual lessons from a guru. Traditionally, spiritual seekers commence to intensify their spiritual 'sadhana' from this day.
The day also finds a great importance for farmers. The period 'Chaturmas' ("four months") begins from this day. The water, drawn up and stored as clouds in the hot summer, now manifests in plentiful showers that brings fresh life everywhere.

गुरुर ब्रह्मा गुरुर विष्णु, गुरुर देवो महेश्वरः
गुरुः साक्षात्परब्रह्मा, तस्मै श्री गुरुवे नमः
“गुरु ही निर्माण करने वाले ब्रह्मा हैं, गुरु ही पालक रूप में विष्णु हैं, गुरु ही संहारक रूप में शिव हैं और वह सर्वस्व के मूल स्रोत हैं। मैं गुरु को अपना सारा नमस्कार करता हूँ।
हिंदू विक्रमी संवत पंचांग के आषाढ़ के महीने में पूर्णिमा का दिन सभी भारतीयों के द्वारा गुरु पूर्णिमा पर्व के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन को "गुरु" यानी शिक्षक या मार्गदर्शक के सम्मान के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
यह दिन महान ऋषि व्यास जी की पवित्र स्मृति में मनाया जाता है, चारो वेदों को संकलित करने वाले इन महान संत, ने 18 पुराण, महाभारत और श्रीमद्भागवत लिखे थे।
यह दिन, जिसे "व्यास पूर्णिमा" के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, महिर्षि व्यास जी के भक्तों द्वारा भी मनाया जाता है। जो इस दिन अपने आदर्श गुरु की पूजा करते हैं। ऋषि व्यास हिंदू धर्म के आदि (मूल) गुरु माने जाते हैं। व्यास पूर्णिमा के शुभ दिन का बहुत महत्व है क्योंकि सभी जानते है कि व्यक्ति के वास्तविक जीवन में गुरु की भूमिका बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है।
उत्सव
हिंदू अपने गुरुओं का बहुत सम्मान करते हैं। गुरुओं को अक्सर भगवान का ही एक रूप में माना जाता है। श्वेताश्वतर उपनिषद (6/23) बताता है:
“यस्य देवे परा भक्तिर यथा देवे तत्र गुरौ
तस्यैते कथिता हि अर्थ: प्रकाशन महात्मन:”
इसका अर्थ है, गुरु को भी देवता के रूप में उसी तरह से पूजा जाता है। सभी को भगवान प्राप्त करने के लिए ईश्वर-प्राप्ति के मार्ग पर जाना है। हालाँकि वह स्वतः व्यक्ति के भीतर निहित है किन्तु आपको उसका बोध करने के लिए किसी गुरु की आवश्यकता होती है।
इस दिन आध्यात्मिक संगठनों द्वारा कई कार्यक्रम और सांस्कृतिक आयोजनो का प्रदर्शन किया जाता हैं। दिन को और अधिक खास बनाने के लिए दिव्य प्रवचन और भजन समारोह भी आयोजित किए जाते हैं।
भारत में, गुरु पूर्णिमा को विभिन्न आश्रमों में भी मनाया जाता है। गुरु पूर्णिमा पर को भारत के बाहर भी कुछ स्थानों पर मनाया जाता है।
यह दिन आध्यात्मिक साधकों के लिए एक महत्व पूर्ण दिन है, जो दिव्य शक्ति प्राप्त करने के लिए अपने गुरुओं से आत्मीयता के साथ जुड़े रहते हैं, और इस कारण से पवित्र लोग अपने लिए गुरु से शुभ दिव्य आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने के लिए गुरु पूर्णिमा के दिन का चयन करते हैं।
महत्व
गुरु पूर्णिमा का दिन आध्यात्मिक साधकों और किसानों के लिए भी बहुत महत्व रखता है। महिर्षि व्यास जी के सभी भक्त अपने आदर्श के सम्मान में व्यास की पूजा करते हैं। सभी शिष्य अपने-अपने आध्यात्मिक मार्गदर्शकों या गुरुदेवों की 'पूजा' करते हैं। वे अपने आध्यात्मिक गुरुओं को फूल और मिठाई भेंट करते हैं। आध्यात्मिक पथ पर चलने के लिए गुरु का चयन करने का भी यह एक अच्छा समय है। परंपरागत रूप से, आध्यात्मिक साधक इस दिन से अपनी आध्यात्मिक 'साधना' को तीव्र करने लगते हैं।
यह दिन किसानों के लिए भी बहुत महत्व रखता है। 'चातुर्मास' ("चार महीने") की अवधि इसी दिन से शुरू होती है। भीषण गर्मी में बादलों के रूप में जमा हुआ पानी अब बहुतायत से बारिश में दिखाई देता है जो हर जगह बरसकर नव जीवन लाता है।
