यह पर्व मुख्य्तः एक महत्वपूर्ण तिथि है, और इस दिन स्नान, दान, जप, होम और पितरो के लिए भोजन, वस्त्र आदि देना उत्तम होता है।
ज्येष्ठ वदी अमावस्या को वट सावित्री का व्रत पूरे भारत में रखा जाता है। शास्त्रों के अनुसार ज्येष्ठ वदी तेरस को प्रात: काल स्नान करके संकल्प करना चाहिए और तीन दिन उपवास रखना चाहिए। तेरस को रात होने पर भोजन करे। चौदस को बिना मांगे जो मिल जाये, उसी से ही एक समय भोजन करे। अमावस्या को उपवास करे। स्नान ध्यान करके वट वृक्ष के पास जाकर बांस कि डलिया में सतनजा बाहर रखकर के वस्त्रो से ढँक दे। दूसरी डलिया में सोने की ब्रह्मा और सावित्री तथा सयावान की मूर्ति रखे रोली चावल आदि से पूजा करें। वट की सूत लपेट कर पूजा करे और फेरी देवे और बड को हाथ जोड़कर घर आ जावे। यह सभी स्त्रियों के लिए श्रेष्ठ व्रत है, यह कन्याओ को अच्छा वर, सुहागिनियो को सौभाग्य पुत्र पौत्र, धन सम्पति व पति प्रेम देने वाला सर्वोत्तम व्रत है।
लोकाचार में इस दिन स्त्रियाँ नहा धोकर अच्छे कपडे तथा गहने पहन कर वट के पास जाती है। दिया जलाकर आरती करती है। आखा लेकर कहानी सुनती हैं, वट को सींचती व कूकडियों के कच्चे सूत को लपेटती हैं। फेरी देती हैं, सुहाग भोग कि कामना करती हैं, बड के पत्ते को तोड़कर उसके छोटे छोटे टुकड़े को मोड़कर चौकोर बनाती हैं। मोली लपेटकर अपने गहनों को बांधती हैं, रात को भिगोया हुआ बिंदिया बाजरा(मोठ, बाजरा, चने आदि) वट पर चढाती है, घर आकर बायना निकाल कर सास, ननद या जिठानी का आशीर्वाद लेती हैं व् उसके पश्चात ही भोजन कर व्रत खोलती हैं |
