कोकिला व्रत पूर्णिमा के दिन चंद्र के आषाढ़ मास में रखा जाता है और यह कहा जाता है कि जब एक विशिष्ट वर्ष में एक अंतरजातीय आषाढ़ मास होता है, उस समय कोकिला व्रत उस वर्ष में रखा जाना चाहिए। इसका तात्पर्य है, कोकिला व्रत के लिए आषाढ़ मास की अवधि का समय उपयुक्त माना जाता है। यह विशिष्ट उत्सव उत्तर भारतीय राज्यों में स्पष्ट रूप से मनाया जाता है। दक्षिणी और पश्चिमी भारत के कुछ स्थानों में, कोकिला व्रत आषाढ़ पूर्णिमा पर किया जाता है।
कोकिला व्रत देवी सती और भगवान शिव को समर्पित है और इसके पीछे एक प्रसिद्ध मान्यता है। कोकिला भारतीय पंख वाले प्राणी कोयल के साथ जुड़ती है और यह देवी सती से संबंधित है। देवी सती ने जब उनके पिता दक्ष से उनके भगवान शिव को अपने पति के रूप में पाने की इच्छा व्यक्त की तो उनके पिता ने साफ़ इंकार कर दिया और इसलिए आगे चलकर, देवी सती ने अपनी आकृति को पुनः प्राप्त करने से पहले 1000 दिव्य से अपने को कोयल के रूप में जलाया और भगवान शिव के साथ की कामना की।
कोकिला व्रत आम तौर पर महिलाओं द्वारा रखा जाता है और कुछ स्थानों पर यह व्रत आषाढ़ पूर्णिमा से श्रावण पूर्णिमा तक एक महीने के लिए रखा जाता है। कोकिला व्रत के दौरान, महिलाएं सुबह जल्दी उठती हैं और वे पृथ्वी के लिए कोयल का प्रतीक बनाती हैं और उसकी पूजा करना शुरू कर देती हैं।

कोकिला व्रत की कहानी
दक्ष प्रजापति नाम का एक शासक था जो भगवान विष्णु का भक्त था। जब उन्होंने एक भयानक राक्षसः को मारा और शिव के बिना देवताओं में से हर एक का स्वागत किया ताकि सती नाम की उनकी छोटी लड़की का विवाह उन देवो में से किसी एक से हो जाए। जब वह इस अवसर का पता सती को लगा, तो उसने शिव से विवाह करने की बात अपने पिता से कही । लेकिन , जब वह सभा में पहुंची, तो उसे शिष्टाचारपूर्ण टिप्पणियों और अपमानजनक आरोपों द्वारा कुचल दिया गया जो शिव पर उसके पिता द्वारा लगाए गए थे। वह इतना परेशान हो गया कि वह होमा की लौ में ही गिर गया। जब शिव को इस समाचार का पता लगा, तो वे चिढ़ गए और अपने एक प्रतीक वीरभद्र को हवन और वध करने के लिए भेज दिया। वह इस हद तक गुस्से में था कि उसने सती को एक कोयल के उड़ने वाले प्राणी के रूप में भी रखा , जो अगले दस हजार सालों से उसका अनुरोध नहीं मानती थी। सती ने शैलजा के रूप में नवीकरण किया और अपने महत्वपूर्ण स्वामी के रूप में भगवान शिव को वापस जीतने के लिए आषाढ़ के पूरे महीने का उपवास किया।
रसम रिवाज
जिस दिन व्रत शुरू होता है, उस दिन कोकिला व्रत रखने वाली देवियों को ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में उठना चाहिए, उदाहरण के लिए भोर से पहले और सभी मानक काम जितनी जल्दी हो सके उतने जल्दी ही करना चाहिए। आंवला और पानी के मिश्रण को पीना चाहिए। यह रिवाज़ अगले आठ से दस दिनों तक जारी रहता है। व्रत की शुरुआत भगवान सूर्य को अर्पित करने के लिए एक मोटी चने के आटे के गोंद का उपयोग करके की जाती है, जिसे दिन की प्रमुख रोटी एक बेवा को भेंट की जाती है। उस समय, कोयल के पंख वाले जीव का एक चिह्न निम्नलिखित आठ दिनों तक हलदी, चंदन, रोली, चावल और गंगाजल के उपयोग के लिए पसंद किया जाता है।

This implies, the period of Ashadh month is considered suitable for Nightingale. This specific festival is clearly celebrated in the North Indian states. In some places in southern and western India, Kokila fast is observed on Ashada Purnima.
The Kokila Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva and has a well-known belief behind it. Kokila joins the Indian winged creature cuckoo and is related to the goddess Sati. When Goddess Sati wishes her father Daksha to have her Lord Shiva as her husband, her father flatly refuses and so, going forward, Goddess Sati recites 1000 celestials from her, before reclaiming her figure. Lit up as a cuckoo and wished for Lord Shiva.
Kokila Vrat is generally observed by women and in some places this fast is kept for one month from Ashada Purnima to Shravan Purnima. During the Nightingale fast, women wake up early in the morning and they symbolize the cuckoo for the earth and begin worshiping it.
The conviction is that women who keep the Nightingale fast will move towards becoming unbroken good luck, meaning that they will never experience a widowed state in their lives, as they will cut off their husband's sins with their virtue. Another strong belief is that looking at the cuckoo images made of clay during the Nightingale fast will help them find a life partner and a worthy groom.
Story of Kokila fast
There was a ruler named Daksha Prajapati who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. When he killed a terrible demon and welcomed every one of the gods without Shiva so that his little girl named Sati would marry one of those deities. When Sati found out about the occasion, she told her father to marry Shiva. But, when she arrives at the gathering, she is crushed by the courtesy remarks and derogatory accusations that were leveled at Shiva by her father. He became so upset that he fell into Homa's flame. When Shiva came to know of this news, he was irritated and sent one of his icons, Veerabhadra, to perform havan and slaughter. He was angry to such an extent that he also kept Sati as a flying creature of a cuckoo, who would not accept her request for the next ten thousand years. Sati renewed as Shailaja and fasted the whole month of Aashad to win back Lord Shiva as his important lord.

On the day when the fast begins, the goddesses observing the Nightingale should wake up at the Brahmamuhurta, for example before dawn and do all the standard work as soon as possible. A mixture of amla and water should be drunk. This custom continues for the next eight to ten days. The fast is started by using a thick gram flour gum to be offered to Lord Surya, which is presented to a Beva, the main bread of the day. At that time, a mark of a cuckoo-winged creature is preferred for the use of turmeric, sandalwood, roli, rice and gangajal for the following eight days.
