पुथांडु तमिल नव वर्ष का त्यौहार है, जो तमिल कैलेंडर में चित्तीरी’ माह का मुख्य दिन है। यह ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर में संभवतः अप्रैल की चौदहवीं तिथि पर पड़ता है। चितरई तमिल सूर्य उन्मुख कार्यक्रम का शुरुआती महीना है और पुथांडु नए वर्ष की शुरुआत का प्रतीक है। इस दिन को तमिलनाडु, पांडिचेरी में विशाल ऊर्जा और तीव्रता के साथ मनाया जाता है और इसके अलावा भारत के बाहर विदेशो में भी इसे बड़े धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है। पुथांडु को अतिरिक्त रूप से 'वृषा पीरप्पु' के रूप में जाना जाता है और राष्ट्र के सभी हिस्सों में विभिन्न नामों से इसकी पहचान की जाती है। केरल में इसे 'विशु', उड़ीसा में 'पाना संक्रांति' के रूप में, पश्चिम बंगाल में 'पोहेला बोइशाख' के रूप में, असम में 'बिहू' के रूप में और पंजाब में इस दिन को 'वैसाखी' के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
पुथांडु के पीछे की कहानी :

उत्सव
पुथांडु के आगमन पर, तमिलनाडु में लोग मंदिरो का दौरा करके व् घर की सफाई करके दिन की शुरुआत करते हैं। तमिलनाडु के कुछ हिस्सों में, उत्सव को 'चिट्टिराई विशु' कहा जाता है। एक खेल योजना के रूप में, एक प्लेट, जिसमें तीन प्राकृतिक उत्पाद हैं - आम, कटहल और केला - सिक्के, सोने या चांदी के रत्नों के रूप में नकदी, एक दर्पण, फूल और सुपारी। घर में सकारात्मक क्रियाओ और खुशियों को आमंत्रित करते हुए, 'कोलैम' नामक फर्श संरचनाओं को मार्ग में छायांकित चावल के आटे का उपयोग करके बनाया जाता है।

Chitrai is the opening month of the Tamil Surya oriented program and Puthandu marks the beginning of the new year. This day is celebrated with great energy and intensity in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and is also celebrated with great pomp in foreign countries outside India. Puthandu is additionally known as ‘Vrisha Peerappu’ and is identified by various names in all parts of the nation. In Kerala it is celebrated as 'Vishu', in Odisha as 'Pana Sankranti', in West Bengal as 'Pohela Boishakh', in Assam as 'Bihu' and in Punjab this day is celebrated as 'Vaisakhi'.
Story behind Puthandu:
Puthandu marks the beginning of Chitrai, the major day of the new year. This is an important festival for Tamils. Some Tamilians refer to Puthandu as the day when Lord Brahma started creating this universe. Some believe that Lord Indra, known as the 'Universal of the Pact', visited the Earth upon the arrival of Puthandu to confirm happiness and harmony. In Tamil Nadu and other southern Indian states of India, Puthandu is a day of excursion and enjoyment. The Tamils have celebrated this festival with great expectation and it is a belief that it gives new year development and their life is full of happiness. Puthandu is seen as the day to start afresh. Different people welcome each other by wishing for 'Puthandu Pirappuv' which seems like a 'Grand New Year'.

On the arrival of Puthandu, people in Tamil Nadu begin the day by visiting temples and cleaning the house. In some parts of Tamil Nadu, the festival is called 'Chittirai Vishu'. As a game plan, a plate containing three natural products - mango, jackfruit and banana - coins, cash in the form of gold or silver gems, a mirror, flowers and betel nut. The floor structures called 'Kollam' are made using shaded rice flour en route, inviting positive actions and joys into the house.
