Vaman Jayanti~

Vamana Jayanti is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi of Bhadrapada month. This festival is also called Vamana Dwadashi.

According to mythological beliefs, Vamana is the fifth form of Lord Vishnu and originated in Shravan Nakshatra on the day of Vamana Dwadashi. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu in the morning with proper rituals. Donating food, rice, yogurt etc. on this day is considered auspicious. At dusk on the day of the festival, devotees should recite the Vamana Katha along with their family members and distribute prasadam to all. Devotees should observe fast and worship Lord Vamana with proper rituals to please and fulfill all wishes.

Importance of Vamana Jayanti

As indicated by Hindu sacred texts, the significance of Vamana Jayanti shows that it is based on Shravan Nakshatra. Devotees should build a statue of Lord Vamana and worship them with proper rituals. A person who worships them with full devotion gets freedom from all sufferings and attains salvation.

Story behind Vamana Jayanti

According to Hindu mythology and sacred writings, it is said that he who performs 100 yajnas will gain the power and ability to rule the earth as well as heaven. King Mahabali was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, but still considered a great threat to the gods. He started performing the 100th Yajna. Lord Indra approached Lord Vishnu to protect the gods, because he feared that King Mahabali might become the last ruler. He requested Lord Vishnu to stop the yajna and not to become the ruler of the entire universe.

After praying to Lord Indra and many other gods, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin incarnated on earth in his 5th incarnation. The king greeted the Brahmin and told him that whatever he would like, he would be given that grant. As a beggar, Lord Vamana asked for 3 pieces of land measured from his feet. Hearing this, King Mahabali first laughed and then agreed to give so much space to the dwarf Brahmin. Subsequently, Vamana grew in size and took a huge form. With the first foot placed, he measured the whole earth, with the second foot, he covered all the heavenly places. There was no room left for placing the third leg by Lord Vamana. Knowing that the dwarf Brahmin is none other than Lord Vishnu, King Mahabali pushes his head forward so that Lord Vamana can take his third step. And the king was not able to complete the yajna and was absorbed in the Hades.

Fasting and Worship Method

It is very important to take a resolution on the day of fasting. After taking bath, remember God.

Lord Vamana was born in the afternoon i.e. Abhijeet Muhurta, so worshiping him at this time is extremely auspicious.

Worship the Vamana form of Lord Vishnu and anoint it with cow's milk in a southeastward conch, because by doing this all your troubles are removed.

After this, place rice, curd and sugar in a vessel and offer it to God and later donate it to a Brahmin.

Lord Vamana should be worshiped even in the evening. For this, after listening or reading the story of God, take a bath again.

Worship and fasting will be considered successful only when food is fed to the poor on this day. If you cannot feed, then donate fruit.
