Pitr Paksha~Shradh~

The time of Ashwin (September-October) is known as Pitru Paksha or Mahalaya Paksha. This is an opportunity for our ancestors to do peace to their souls and perform shraadh to liberate them. In Hinduism, parents are given the highest position. Thanking him for all his work, for his will, serving him with body, heart, soul and money in his time of need enhances the talent of human society. In the memory of ancestors, the work done for their welfare is called Pind Daan or Tarpan.

Importance of Pitru Paksha

Mythological texts state that before Devpuja, people should worship their ancestors. Gods are also pleased when ancestors are pleased. This is the reason why living in Indian culture, elders of the house are respected and shraddha karma is performed after death. It is believed that if rituals are not performed according to the method of the ancestors, they do not attain salvation and their soul wanders here and there. There is also an astrological reason to celebrate Pitru Paksha. Pitra dosha is considered very important in astrology. When a person reaches near success, even when he is deprived of success, problems in childbirth, loss of money, etc., then Jyotishacharya tells strong possibilities of suffering from Pitridosh. That is why the peace of fathers is considered necessary for the liberation from Pitradosh.

Story of Father's Side

According to mythological folklore, there were two brothers named Joga and Bhoga. Both lived separately. Joga was rich and Bhoga was poor. There was a lot of love between the two brothers but Joga's wife was very proud of the money. On the other hand, Bhoga's wife was very simple and gentle. When the father died, Joga's wife asked him to perform the shraddha of the fathers, then Joga started avoiding him instead of understanding him. The wife felt that if Shraddha was not performed, then people would make up things and this would bring disrepute to them. He thought that this is an opportune moment to invite his maternal grandfather to the feast and show his supremacy to the people. Then he said to Joga, 'You are probably saying this because of my trouble. I will not mind. I talk to Bhoga's wife and together we will take care of them all. He then sent Joga to invite his maiden.

The next day, Bhoga's wife went to Joga's house and did all the work. Cooked food in the kitchen and also made many dishes. After finishing work she came to her house. He also had to offer ancestors. Pitru landed on the ground in the afternoon. First he went to Jogi's house. There he saw that Jogi's in-laws are busy eating food. Then he became very sad and went to Bhoga's house. Bhoga's family named 'Agiyari' in the name of the fathers there. The father licked his ashes and went to the bank of a hungry river. In a short time, all the ancestors gathered and started shraddh at their respective places. Heard the story of Joga-Bhoga's father. Then they started thinking that if they were rich, they would not have to starve. There was no bread at Bhoga's house on 2 June. Thinking all this, the father took pity on them. Suddenly they started dancing and said - 'Bhogi's house should be rich, Bhogi's house should be rich'.

It was evening. Even the children of Bhoga did not get anything to eat. The children told the mother that she was hungry. Mother asked the children to escape, 'Go! In the courtyard, there will be utensils on the corner. Open it and eat whatever you get. When the children go there, they see that the pot is full of money, ornaments and dishes. He went to his mother and told the whole thing. On coming to the courtyard, when Bhoga's wife saw all this, she was surprised. In this way, the bhoga became rich, but he did not boast. The next year again came the occasion of Pitru Paksha Shraddha. On the day of Shraddha, Bhoga's wife prepared Chhappan Bhoga. Brahmins were called, performed shraadh, served food and gave alms. Pitru was very happy and satisfied after seeing all this.

Rituals During Pitru Paksha :

The Rituals  of shraddh or tarpan is performed by a male member, who is usually the eldest son in the family. On the day when those who perform Pitra Paksha take a bath, Kush wears a dhoti and ring made of grass. According to Hindu texts, Kush grass is a symbol of compassion and is used to invoke ancestors.

The tradition of offering sesame, rice and shells made of barley flour is celebrated in Pind Daan. The Pitru Paksha rituals are performed under the guidance of a knowledgeable priest. After this, Lord Vishnu is invoked using another sacred grass for blessing, which is known as 'Darbha Grass'. This form of grass is known for its uninterrupted growth and hence it is believed that the use of Darbha grass eliminates obstacles in a person's life.

On the day of Pitru Paksha, food is prepared to be offered to the ancestors. It is a tradition to give crows a portion of this food, as crows are considered to be the messengers of Lord Yama. If the crow takes food, it is considered an auspicious sign. After this, a Brahmin priest is invited to dine and Dakshina is given to perform the ceremony. After completing all these customs, the family members sit together and have their meal.

During the Pitru Paksha, it is considered very good to read sacred Hindu writings like 'Agni Purana, Garuda Purana', and listen to various stories of Ganga Avataram and Nachiketa.
