My intention was to work at the SISS centre today, however I received a call from Dr. Williams telling me that I may be able to start my internship with DOVVSU today, and therefore decided to wait for Dr. Williams to call me. I had not received a call by 1400 hours and decided visit the Sikh Temple (Gurdwara) which was extremely difficult to find. I had spotted a south Indian male in town and had asked him if he knows the whereabouts of a Gurdwara, and he was able to provide me with a Sikh priest’s son’s phone number, who had helped me with directions to the Gurdwara. Raman, Rina and I went on an adventure to find the Gurdwara which was located in Makola Market, Tudu. Once near the Gurdwara, the local people had pointed me in the right direction. The priest was extremely welcoming, and after our prayers we had the opportunity to have a pleasant discussion with the priest. The priest had informed me that this was the only Gurdwara in Ghana and that the Sikh population was very small. In fact my preconceived notions were that there were no Indian people in Ghana, however as globalization occur people are migrating throughout the world.
Interestingly throughout my whole life I have never sat or talked to a Sikh priest, and ironically I did so in Ghana, the last place I would expect to visit a Gurdwara. Once again I have received easy going and welcoming Ghanaian behavior from the south Indian man who provided me with the priest’s son’s phone number, the priest’s son by helping with directions and the priest himself.
