नवरात्र में देवी माँ के व्रत रखे जाते हैं । स्थान–स्थान पर देवी माँ की मूर्तियाँ बनाकर उनकी विशेष पूजा की जाती हैं । घरों में भी अनेक स्थानों पर कलश स्थापना कर दुर्गा सप्तशती पाठ आदि होते हैं भगवती के नौ प्रमुख रूप (अवतार) हैं तथा प्रत्येक बार 9-9 दिन ही ये विशिष्ट पूजाएं की जाती हैं। इस काल को नवरात्र कहा जाता है। वर्ष में दो बार भगवती भवानी की विशेष पूजा की जाती है। इनमें एक नवरात्र तो चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा से नवमी तक होते हैं और दूसरे श्राद्धपक्ष के दूसरे दिन आश्विन शुक्ल प्रतिपदा से आश्विन शुक्ल नवमी तक।

इस व्रत में नौ दिन तक भगवती दुर्गा का पूजन, दुर्गा सप्तशती का पाठ तथा एक समय भोजन का व्रत धारण किया जाता है। प्रतिपदा के दिन प्रात: स्नानादि करके संकल्प करें तथा स्वयं या पण्डित के द्वारा मिट्टी की वेदी बनाकर जौ बोने चाहिए। उसी पर घट स्थापना करें। फिर घट के ऊपर कुलदेवी की प्रतिमा स्थापित कर उसका पूजन करें तथा 'दुर्गा सप्तशती' का पाठ कराएं। पाठ-पूजन के समय अखण्ड दीप जलता रहना चाहिए। वैष्णव लोग राम की मूर्ति स्थापित कर रामायण का पाठ करते हैं। दुर्गा अष्टमी तथा नवमी को भगवती दुर्गा देवी की पूर्ण आहुति दी जाती है। नैवेद्य, चना, हलवा, खीर आदि से भोग लगाकर कन्या तथा छोटे बच्चों को भोजन कराना चाहिए। नवरात्र ही शक्ति पूजा का समय है, इसलिए नवरात्र में इन शक्तियों की पूजा करनी चाहिए।

नवरात्र क्या है

पृथ्वी द्वारा सूर्य की परिक्रमा के काल में एक साल की चार संधियाँ हैं। उनमें मार्च व सितंबर माह में पड़ने वाली गोल संधियों में साल के दो मुख्य नवरात्र पड़ते हैं। इस समय रोगाणु आक्रमण की सर्वाधिक संभावना होती है। ऋतु संधियों में अक्सर शारीरिक बीमारियाँ बढ़ती हैं, अत: उस समय स्वस्थ रहने के लिए, शरीर को शुध्द रखने के लिए और तनमन को निर्मल और पूर्णत: स्वस्थ रखने के लिए की जाने वाली प्रक्रिया का नाम 'नवरात्र'

नौ दिन या रात

अमावस्या की रात से अष्टमी तक या पड़वा से नवमी की दोपहर तक व्रत नियम चलने से नौ रात यानी 'नवरात्र' नाम सार्थक है। यहाँ रात गिनते हैं, इसलिए नवरात्र यानि नौ रातों का समूह कहा जाता है।रूपक के द्वारा हमारे शरीर को नौ मुख्य द्वारों वाला कहा गया है। इसके भीतर निवास करने वाली जीवनी शक्ति का नाम ही दुर्गा देवी है। इन मुख्य इन्द्रियों के अनुशासन, स्वच्छ्ता, तारतम्य स्थापित करने के प्रतीक रूप में, शरीर तंत्र को पूरे साल के लिए सुचारू रूप से क्रियाशील रखने के लिए नौ द्वारों की शुध्दि का पर्व नौ दिन मनाया जाता है। इनको व्यक्तिगत रूप से महत्त्व देने के लिए नौ दिन नौ दुर्गाओं के लिए कहे जाते हैं।

शरीर को सुचारू रखने के लिए विरेचन, सफाई या शुध्दि प्रतिदिन तो हम करते ही हैं किन्तु अंग-प्रत्यंगों की पूरी तरह से भीतरी सफाई करने के लिए हर छ: माह के अंतर से सफाई अभियान चलाया जाता है। सात्विक आहार के व्रत का पालन करने से शरीर की शुध्दि, साफ सुथरे शरीर में शुध्द बुद्धि, उत्तम विचारों से ही उत्तम कर्म, कर्मों से सच्चरित्रता और क्रमश: मन शुध्द होता है। स्वच्छ मन मंदिर में ही तो ईश्वर की शक्ति का स्थायी निवास होता है।

इनका नौ जड़ी बूटी या ख़ास व्रत की चीज़ों से भी सम्बंध है, जिन्हें नवरात्र के व्रत में प्रयोग किया जाता है-

कुट्टू (शैलान्न)
दूध-दही
चौलाई (चंद्रघंटा)
पेठा (कूष्माण्डा)
श्यामक चावल (स्कन्दमाता)
हरी तरकारी (कात्यायनी)
काली मिर्च व तुलसी (कालरात्रि)
साबूदाना (महागौरी)
आंवला(सिद्धीदात्री)
क्रमश: ये नौ प्राकृतिक व्रत खाद्य पदार्थ हैं।

अष्टमी या नवमी

यह कुल परम्परा के अनुसार तय किया जाता है। भविष्योत्तर पुराण में और देवी भावगत के अनुसार, बेटों वाले परिवार में या पुत्र की चाहना वाले परिवार वालों को नवमी में व्रत खोलना चाहिए। वैसे अष्टमी, नवमी और दशहरे के चार दिन बाद की चौदस, इन तीनों की महत्ता "दुर्गासप्तशती" में कही गई है।

कन्या पूजन

अष्टमी और नवमी दोनों ही दिन कन्या पूजन और लोंगड़ा पूजन किया जा सकता है। अतः श्रद्धापूर्वक कन्या पूजन करना चाहिये।

सर्वप्रथम माँ जगदम्बा के सभी नौ स्वरूपों का स्मरण करते हुए घर में प्रवेश करते ही कन्याओं के पाँव धोएं।
इसके बाद उन्हें उचित आसन पर बैठाकर उनके हाथ में मौली बांधे और माथे पर बिंदी लगाएं।
उनकी थाली में हलवा-पूरी और चने परोसे।
अब अपनी पूजा की थाली जिसमें दो पूरी और हलवा-चने रखे हुए हैं, के चारों ओर हलवा और चना भी रखें। बीच में आटे से बने एक दीपक को शुद्ध घी से जलाएं।
कन्या पूजन के बाद सभी कन्याओं को अपनी थाली में से यही प्रसाद खाने को दें।
अब कन्याओं को उचित उपहार तथा कुछ राशि भी भेंट में दें।
जय माता दी कहकर उनके चरण छुएं और उनके प्रस्थान के बाद स्वयं प्रसाद खाने से पहले पूरे घर में खेत्री के पास रखे कुंभ का जल सारे घर में बरसाएँ।


 
 

In Navratri, fast of Goddess Maa Durga are performed. Devotees made Idols of Maa Durga and perform special worship at various places. Durga Saptashati chanting is performed after placement of Kalash(pitcher). There are nine main forms (Avtars) of Devi Maa Bhagwati, and in Navratri everytime these special worship (puja) are performed for all nine days. This time period is called Navaratri. This Special worship of Bhagwati Bhavani is performed twice in a year. Among them, a Navratri is from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (first day) to Navami (ninth day) and the second Navratri are started on the second day of Shradh Paksha or Ashvin Shukla Pratipada (first day of darker fortnight) ends on the Ashvin Shukla Navmi (ninth day of darker fortnight).

In this fast, the worship of Goddess Durga, the chanting of the scripture Durga Saptashati and fasting of food at one time is kept by Devotee. On the day of Pratipada after taking bath in the morning make a resolution, and sow the barley after making a clay altar by itself or by the Pandit. Establish a Kalash(pitcher) on the clay altar. Then set up the statue of Kuldevi on Kalsah and worship it and recite 'Durga Saptashati' chanting. The Akhanda Deep should be lighten while worshiping. Vaishnava recite the Ramayana by establishing the idol of Ram. Devotees offer a full sacrifice to Goddess Durga on the day of Durga Ashtami and Navami. Prashad of Nivedya, Chana, Halwa, Kheer etc. should be distributed to feed the Kanya(girls) and young children. Navaratri is the time to worship Shakti(Power), therefore, in these Navratri, these powers should be worshiped.

What is Navratri

There are four joins of a year in the time of the orbital revolution of the sun by earth. Two round joins of them falling in the months of March and September are two main Navratri of the year. There is a high probability of germ attack in this time period. Physical illness will increase in these seasonal joins, Hence a process of Ritual treatments is performed to be healthy, to keep the body pure and to keep the body clean and fully fit, and this process is known as Navaratri.

Nine Days and Nights

The name 'Navaratri' is described by the fast from the night of Amavasya till the Ashtami or the fast from Pratipada till day of Navami. Here the nights are counted, Hence the name of the Navaratri that is called the group of nine nights. Through the formation, our body is said to be of nine main doors. The name of the biography that resides within it is called Durga Devi. In order to establish the discipline, cleanliness, harmony of these main senses, the celebration of the nine-door cleansing is celebrated by nine days to keep the body system functioning smoothly for the whole year. Nine days are dedicated for Nav Durgas to give them such importance by the devotees.

To keep the body healthy and fit, we do cleaning and purification every day, but cleanliness drive is carried out in every 6 month to complete internal purification of body parts. By performing the fast of Satvic diet, purification of the body achieved, in a clean body purified intellect takes place, good action by good thoughts, by good thoughts truthfulness and the mind is purified respectively. Only in the pure mind like as temple there is a permanent residence of God's power.

These are also related to nine herbs or special fasting things, which are used in the fasting of Navratri -

Kuttu (Shailputri)
Milk-Curd (Brahamcharini)
Chowlai (Chandhangta)
Petha (Kusmanda)
Bread Coal (Skandamata)
Green Vegetable (Katyayani)
Black Pepper and Tulsi (Kalaratri)
Sabudana (Mahagauri)
Amla (Siddhiidatri)
These are nine natural fast food items, respectively.

Ashtami and Navami

It is decided according to the ancestor tradition. According to the Bhavishyottar Purana and the Devi Bhagvat, in the family of sons or those who want a son should open fast in Navami. The significance of Durga Ashtami, Navami and Chaudash the after fourth day after dussehra, is described in "Durga Saptashati".

Kanya Pujan

Kanya Pooja and Longda Pujan can be worshiped on both the Ashtami and Navami days. Therefore, Devotee should have worship girls with devotion.

First of all be thankful to the nine forms of Maa Jagadamba, wash the feet of the Kanyas(girls) after entering in the house. After this, offer them the best place to sit and tie the mauli(thread) in their hands and place a Bindi(tilak) on the forehead.
Distribute prashad by offering halwa-puri and chana in their plates.
Now keep halva and chana(gram) around your worship plate, which has two Puri and halwa-chana and light a deepak(lamp) of flour with pure ghee in the center of plate.
After Kanya Pujan(worship of girls), distribute this Prashad to all the girls to eat from the plate.
Now give proper gifts and some amount of money to the girls.
Devotees should touch the feet of Kanyas by chanting Jai Mata Di and after their departure, and before taking the prashad shower the water of the Kumbh(pitcher) kept near Khetri in the entire house.
