करवा चौथ भारत के उत्तर-पश्चिम में रहने वाले हिंदुओं और सिखों द्वारा व्यापक रूप से मनाया जाता है। करवा का तात्पर्य गंदगी के बर्तन से है जबकि चौथ का अर्थ चौथा है। करवा चौथ हिंदू कैलेंडर के कार्तिक महीने में पूर्णिमा के बाद आता है। इस उत्सव को आमतौर पर सर्दियों की फसल से पूर्व मनाया जाता है। यह साथी और रिश्तेदारों और व्यापार बंदोबस्त को पूरा करने का सबसे अच्छा समय है। इस उत्सव के दौरान लोग अपनी विवाहित लड़कियों को आशीर्वाद व् उपहार भी भेजा करते हैं।

करवा चौथ भारत के विशिष्ट भागों में विवाहित महिलाओं के बीच अपनी अभूतपूर्व लोकप्रियता के लिए जाना जाता है। करवा चौथ को विभिन्न जगहों पर सामूहिक रूप से मनाया जाता है। इस उत्सव के दौरान, महिला के रिश्तेदार और मां दोनों से श्रृंगार, पोशाक और आशीर्वाद ग्रहण किया जाता है। सभी विवाहित महिलाएं शाम के समय में दुल्हन की भांति पोशाक पहनती हैं और मेहंदी लगाती हैं।

इस उत्सव में महिलाओं ने अनूठे परिधान पहनती है। सोने के बुने हुए उदाहरण के साथ एक गुलाबी या लाल साड़ी कई महिलाओं द्वारा अपने रिवाज के अनुसार पहना जाता है और केवल रात में पहना जाता है। नई महिलाएं अपनी शादी का जोड़ा पहनती है। करवा चौथ हिंदुओं द्वारा मनाए जाने वाले सबसे महान समारोहों में से एक है।
